ACNE, ECZEMA, PSORIASIS AND GENERAL
SKIN PROBLEMS |

 |
| BIOPTRON Light Therapy can be a highly
effective complementary therapy for the treatment of various
skin problems, such as :
• ACNE
• ECZEMA
• PSORIASIS
• ATOPIC DERMATITIS
• HERPES SKIN INFECTIONS
Skin infections caused by viruses or bacteria
and conditions affecting the mouth such as :
• Ulcers
• Gum disease
• Inflammation of the lining of the mouth
• Inflammations of the lips
• Cold sores (herpes simplex), etc
These types of skin conditions are quite common and
most people will experience one or more of them at some
point in their life. Although most skin diseases are
not life-threatening, they can be very distressing for
the sufferer and have a negative impact on their quality
of life. Some people with skin conditions may feel ashamed
or stigmatised by their disease, particularly if it
affects visible parts of the body such as the face or
hands. Non-sufferers sometimes have incorrect views
about the skin disease, e.g. that is is contagious,
or that the sufferer is ‘unclean’. A further
problem with some of these skin diseases is that patients
frequently do not like the existing treatments. For
example, many of the creams used to treat psoriasis
are greasy, smell unpleasant and stain clothing.
ACNE
Acne is a common skin disease that causes pimples. Pimples
form when hair follicles under the skin clog up. Most
pimples form on the face, neck, back chest and shoulders.
Anyone can get acne, but it is especially common in
teenagers and young adults. It is not serious, but it
can cause scars. It is not fully understood exactly
what causes acne. Hormone changes, such as those during
the teenage years and pregnancy, are thought to play
a prominent role. There is little evidence that greasy
foods and chocolates have much effect on acne in most
people. Nor does stress cause acne, but stress can make
it worse. Acne occurs in about 80% of teenagers and
young adults, particularly young men. The presence of
numerous spots on the face can cause psychological problems,
including loss of confidence and feelings of depression.
ECZEMA
Eczema is a term for several different types of skin
swelling. Eczema is also called dermatitis. It is not
dangerous, nor is it contagious, but most types of eczema
cause red, swollen and itchy skin. Factors that can
cause eczema include: other diseases, irritating substances,
an individual’s particular genetic makeup, and
stress. The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis,
an allergic condition most common in babies and children
that makes the skin dry and itchy. Eczema cannot be
cured at present, but some types of eczema may be prevented
by avoiding irritants, stress and allergic situations.
PSORIASIS
Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes itchy or sore
patches of thick, red skin with silvery scales. It usually
occurs on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms
and feet. A problem with the immune system causes psoriasis.
In a process called cell turnover, skin cells that grow
deep in the skin rise to the surface. Normally, this
takes a month. In psoriasis, it happens in just days
because these cells rise too fast. Psoriasis can last
a long time, sometimes even a lifetime. Symptoms may
come and go and things that make them worse include;
infections, stress, dry skin and certain medications.
Psoriasis usually occurs in adults and sometimes runs
in families.
ATOPIC DERMATITIS
People who are ‘atopic’ have allergies to
items commonly found in their environment, such as grass
pollen, animal hair, and certain types of food, etc.
These allergies result in the development of conditions
such as hay fever, asthma and atopic dermatitis. Atopic
dermatitis is also known as atopic eczema or endogenous
eczema. Atopic dermatitis is a common condition, affecting
5% of the general population and up to 15% of children.
It presents as itchy, red, scaly skin patches that can
occur anywhere on the body. Some people may have it
for years and then their skin clears up, while other
people have more severe, long-term disease.
HERPES SKIN INFECTIONS
The herpes family of viruses cause many types of disease
in humans and are very difficult to eradicate. The two
main types of herpes virus that cause common skin infections
are herpes simplex which causes cold sores and varicella
(herpes) zoster, which causes chickenpox and shingles.
People with weakened immune systems (e.g. people suffering
with HIV/AIDS or cancer, patients receiving chemotherapy,
etc) are particularly vulnerable to herpes infections.
BIOPTRON Light Therapy may help to treat these skin
infections by relieving pain and inflammation, by promoting
a healing response in any skin lesions and by stimulating
the immune system to fight off the infection.

HOW DOES BIOPTRON LIGHT THERAPY HELP IN SKIN DISEASES ?
When the BIOPTRON medical device is held over the skin
surface, energy from the emitted light penetrates the
skin and underlying tissues. This produces a biological
response, called photo-biostimulation, causing various
beneficial reactions including :
• Activation of immune cells that target bacteria
• Activation of cells that digest microbes • Activation of cells that attack viruses and
tumours • Reduction in the pain stimulus • Reduction in the discomfort and “itchiness”
of various skin conditions • BIOPTRON has been reported to be beneficial
in the improvement of residual scarring remaining as
a result of various skin conditions (e.g. extensive
acne, etc)
BIOPTRON Light Therapy is clean, painless, safe and
simple to use. Individual treatments are of relatively
short duration and are most pleasant to experience.
